Trama
Maria lascia l’istituto di carità, dov’essa, orfana, è vissuta per tanti anni, per recarsi in città, al servizio di una ricca signora. Insidiata da un nipote di questa, essa viene ospitata da Lucia, una giovane di buon cuore, che le procura un posto di commessa nei Grandi Magazzini. In seguito Maria fa la conoscenza di Massimo, ricco proprietario, che s’innamora di lei. Tra i due s’è formato un legame di reciproco affetto, che mette in allarme Clara, una ragazza, che ha posto gli occhi su Massimo e vorrebbe sposarlo. Con la complicità del nipote della ricca signora, già padrona di Maria, essa si spaccia per la moglie di Massimo. Lo stratagemma ottiene l’effetto voluto: Maria lascia la città con una compagnia di guitti, dalla quale si stacca ben presto. Il caso le fa incontrare nuovamente Massimo, che è ignaro della mistificazione compiuta da Clara. Ma Clara riesce a destare nell’animo di Massimo dei dubbi sull’onestà di Maria. Questa dà alla luce una bimba, che, per consiglio di Lucia, affida al padre di Massimo. Clara reagisce, pretendendo che la bimba sia allontanata; ma nel cuore della discussione essa lascia scorgere i suoi veri sentimenti.
