Trama
1928, Manciuria. Itami, un giovane giapponese, si innamora pazzamente di Cynthia, una bella ragazza cinese ma viene richiamato in patria per fare il servizio militare e i due sono costretti a separarsi. Dopo essersi salutati alla stazione, Cynthia assiste al brutale assassinio di suo fratello da parte di un estremista della destra giapponese. Tre anni dopo Shanghai è ufficialmente occupata dal Giappone, l’atmosfera in città diventa tesa. La ragazza, conosciuta oramai con il nome di Ding Hui lavora per un gruppo di resistenza, Purple Butterfly, che prepara l’assassinio di Yamamoto, capo dei servizi segreti giapponesi.
