Trama
Anna, erede dei Rassimov, torna nella sontuosa villa di campagna con il giovane Alex, medico velleitario e marito impotente. Alex, mentre rimuove ragnatele e polvere e udendo agghiaccianti risate, trova un diario nel quale il defunto Rassimov annotava gli esperimenti per scoprire il segreto della vita e della morte e per creare la vita mediante macchine elettriche. Esasperato dalla gelosia per il dottor Valewski, alle cui attenzioni Anna non è insensibile, Alex si mette ad uccidere tutto ciò che è oggetto di amore, dal cane di Anna ai villici. I suoi delitti vengono imputati ad altri, finché Anna e Valewski giungono a scoprirlo, ma troppo tardi; Anna è uccisa in un tentativo furente di amore. Finalmente preso dai rimorsi Alex corre verso il paese gridando le proprie colpe, e viene ucciso dai soldati mentre si arrampica sul patibolo dove hanno appena impiccato un mendicante innocente.
