Trama
Una giovane orfana viene raccolta nella casa di un possidente di campagna che le fa da padre. Ma una sera, rientrato in casa ubriaco o preso da una passione insana, egli la violenta. Pentito del suo gesto vuol riparare il male fatto e, malgrado la discreta differenza di età, fa preparare le carte per sposarla. Ciò provoca molte dicerie nel paese e l’aperta ostilità nella famiglia e quando, poco tempo prima delle nozze, il possidente rimane ucciso, la ragazza viene immediatamente scacciata. Senza risorse e prossima ad essere madre la donna passa attraverso le più dolorose prove riuscendo tuttavia a mantenersi onesta. Ma quando una malattia le toglie la sua creatura ella non ha più la forza di lottare e cade sempre più in basso, finché non incontra, dopo vario tempo, il nipote del possidente, da lei segretamente amato, anch’egli ridotto in miseria. Chiariti i malintesi i due giovani decidono di rifarsi insieme una vita dimenticando il passato.
