Trama
Due coniugi, Eva e Jan, costretti durante la guerra ad abbandonare il loro lavoro di musicisti, si sono ritirati in una fattoria su un’isola, vivendo la vita dei campi e disinteressandosi completamente di quanto avviene nel mondo. L’incalzare della guerra però li riconduce alla dura realtà, quando i paracadutisti nemici invadono l’isola. L’esercito regolare riesce ad avere la meglio ma, alla fine della battaglia, i due coniugi vengono falsamente accusati di aver collaborato col nemico e vengono imprigionati e torturati. Grazie all’intervento di Jacobi, sindaco del paese e capo del presidio, invaghitosi di Eva, i due riacquistano la libertà. In questa situazione particolare i loro sentimenti si esasperano e l’incomprensione fra i due coniugi si acuisce a tal punto che Eva si concede a Jacobi. Ciò provoca un’ulteriore scossa in Jan il quale, spietatamente e con freddezza, uccide Jacobi e poi, per futili motivi, un giovane sbandato. Decisi ad abbandonare l’isola si imbarcano clandestinamente, ma il battello, dopo una breve navigazione, va alla deriva circondato da una moltitudine di cadaveri.
