Trama
Bill Carey, capitano del controspionaggio americano di stanza in Italia nella zona del lago d’Orta, appoggia le azioni dei partigiani e cerca in ogni modo di nasconderli. Lui e gli altri hanno la loro base nei sotterranei della villa dei de’ Cresci dove la contessina Giulia, innamorata di Bill, cerca di fornirgli il maggiore aiuto possibile. Una notte però i tedeschi attaccano il rifugio: arrestano Giulia e Bill viene ferito gravemente. Quattro anni dopo la guerra è finita e Bill è tornato a New York senza avere più notizie della donna che ama, che crede morta, e dei partigiani che erano con lui. Quando ad una mostra di quadri vede una tela che ornava una delle pareti del rifugio, il passato gli piomba di nuovo addosso e Bill sente il bisogno di conoscere la verità. Arrivato sul lago d’Orta si accorge che i paesani che un tempo lo hanno accolto ed aiutato ora dimostrano verso di lui diffidenza, perché credono che sia stato lui a denunciare i partigiani fucilati poi senza pietà dai tedeschi. Innocente, Bill cerca di indagare per discolparsi e si reca nella villa dei de’ Cresci, dove ritrova Giulia, che ha sposato il barone Rocco Greffi. Per ironia della sorte proprio lui è stato il traditore e a Bill non resta che formulare le accuse.
