Trama
Quattordici persone di età diverse – sette uomini e sette donne – si riuniscono in un confortevole albergo in riva al mare per svolgere un esperimento ispirato alle teorie di uno psicanalista austriaco. L’ideatore – il professor Emilio Missiroli – vuol dimostrare che soltanto infrangendo i mille tabù’ che soffocano la vita sessuale si può liberare l’uomo dal suo malessere esistenziale. Ogni sera, quindi, per un’intera settimana, uomini e donne del gruppo si accoppieranno, mediante un sorteggio, senza dare nessuna importanza ai loro sentimenti, dimostrando così che di questi si può e si deve fare a meno. Il giovane figlio del professore, però, partecipa controvoglia all’esperimento, soffre nel vedere Stella, la ragazza di cui è innamorato, passare con indifferenza da un letto a un altro. Altre complicazioni sorgono dalla presenza nel gruppo di moglie e marito, genitore e figlio, fratello e sorella; infine nessuno, prima ancora che la prova sia conclusa, sembra averne tratto giovamento. Alcuni, i più giovani, fuggono e, con loro, anche Rita, la giovane di cui l’anziano Segre è rimasto irrimediabilmente affascinato. Quando questi, disperato, si impicca, i rimasti sfogano il loro risentimento contro il professore; chiamano la polizia e tutta la faccenda finisce in tribunale.
