Trama
Una damigella francese – Aimée – da poco uscita di collegio, nel 1774 viene rapita dai pirati durante un viaggio nel Mediterraneo e venduta ad Algeri a Abdul-Hamid, Sultano ottomano. Abdul è ormai assai anziano: ha il suo harem, diretto da una bella moglie (francese anch’essa), ma vuole che la nuova venuta, scelta dai suoi emissari, gli si dia solo per amore. Da prima Aimée resiste e si ribella, poi cede. Rimane incinta, ma la sua gelosa compatriota fa strangolare il bambino e allora essa si risolve a considerare come figlio Mahmud, orfano di un’altra moglie del Sultano, covando il sogno che un giorno egli erediti il potere in luogo di Mustafà, figlio della sua nemica. L’ascendente di Aimée è in crescita: abile ed energica, essa riesce anche ad interessare Abdul, un po’ pigro e disincantato, a partire in guerra con i suoi soldati contro i Russi. Abdul riporta la vittoria, ma i malfidi militari lo uccidono, poiché essi vogliono Mustafà sul trono. Prende invece il potere Selim – un nipote del defunto – innamorato di Aimée, ma le cose si fanno per lui difficili, poiché egli non ha un harem e ama la francesina (che peraltro lo ricambia). I due finiscono in una cella insieme al piccolo Mahmud e Mustafà, salito al trono, fa strangolare il rivale. Selim si vendica e, pugnalato il nuovo Sultano, fa proclamare al suo posto Mahmud. Fino al 1817 – data della morte della favorita – questa domina sull’harem e di fatto sul potente Impero Ottomano, lottando contro superstizioni e leggi barbare e tessendo accordi con la sua Patria di origine per avere armi efficienti e modernizzare il Paese.
