Trama
Luisa e Natale, due giovani che s’amano sinceramente, si sposano; ma essendo poverissimi (lui fa il muratore, lei presta servizio come domestica), non sono in grado di risolvere per proprio conto il problema della casa e vanno ad abitare provvisoriamente in quella superaffollata dei parenti di lui. Ma tale coabitazione non lascia ai due sposi neppure quel minimo di libertà e di autonomia, che sono indispensabili alla vita coniugale, mentre provoca continui attriti coi parenti. Dopo un ennesimo litigio, i due sposi lasciano quella casa: Luisa trova ospitalità presso la sua padrona, Natale dorme in una baracca del cantiere. Luisa, che aspetta un bambino, apprende per caso che in certe zone periferiche c’è la possibilità di costruire abusivamente, su terreni comunali, una minuscola casetta. È però necessario edificare la casa e coprirla col tetto durante una nottata. Se c’è il tetto, la casa si considera finita e le guardie, sopraggiungendo, non hanno più il diritto di mandar via chi vi abita. Cedendo alle insistenze di Luisa, Natale fa un debito per poter acquistare il materiale necessario e una notte inizia la costruzione. Il primo tentativo non riesce, ma i due si trasferiscono in un’altra zona, dove, trovato un punto adatto, Natale e i suoi amici si mettono a lavorare febbrilmente. Col valido aiuto del cognato la costruzione procede rapidamente e quando arrivano le guardie, il tetto è quasi ultimato. Le guardie fingono di non vedere che nel tetto c’è un buco: Natale e Luisa hanno ormai la loro casa.
