Trama
Archie Rice è un mediocre attore d’avanspettacolo che non ha mai conosciuto il successo. Nonostante questo e i numerosi debiti contratti, Archie continua a realizzare spettacoli aspettando che la fortuna giri in suo favore. Accanto a lui vivono sua figlia Jean, i figli Frank, che è il suo braccio destro sul palcoscenico, e il più piccolo, Mick, suo padre Billy, ed infine la sua seconda moglie Phoebe. Dopo il fallimento dell’ennesimo spettacolo, Archie non si dà per vinto e architetta un nuovo numero per il quale scrittura una ragazza molto giovane, promettendo di sposarla se suo padre, molto ricco, li finanzierà. Il progetto però sfuma per l’intromissione di Jean per cui Archie, inseguito dai creditori, chiede a suo padre Billy di aiutarlo a non finire in prigione. Billy, un tempo famoso attore di varietà, acconsente a tornare sulle scene, ma un attimo prima che si alzi il sipario, muore per l’emozione. È un duro colpo per Archie, a cui si aggiunge la morte in battaglia del giovane Mick. L’unica salvezza rimane un lavoro d’ufficio in Canada offerto dal fratello di Phoebe. Piuttosto di rinunciare al teatro ed ammettere così il proprio fallimento, Archie preferisce scontare le proprie colpe in prigione.
