Trama
Warren Rooney, giocatore e baro di professione, s’associa con Alex Booth e Jacques Causier, due individui conosciuti su una nave diretta a Dubrovnik, per derubare, giocando a poker, un finanziere italiano, Alberto Dall’Isola, che è in possesso di una carta di credito, riscuotibile a Ginevra, di duecentocinquantamila dollari. Informatissimi, i suoi due soci, lo avvertono che il loro uomo, dopo aver perso al gioco una fortuna, da anni non tocca le carte. Per quanto una ragazza, Gloria, che si è innamorata di lui, rischi di mandare all’aria il suo piano, Rooney riesce abilmente a risvegliare in Dall’Isola la passione del gioco. Combinata la partita, la carta di credito, come previsto, passa dalle mani del finanziere in quelle dei tre bari, ma ecco sorgere una difficoltà per riscuoterla e spartirsi il bottino. Visto che, come d’accordo, tutti e tre dovranno, di lì a qualche giorno, ritrovarsi a Varsavia per un altro “colpo”, si procede a uno scambio: Rooney andrà a Ginevra, a riscuotere il credito; Alex e Jacques, per garantirsi, si terranno i cinquantamila dollari in contanti che Warren ha con sé. Separatosi dai due soci, però, Rooney scopre di essere stato truffato: la carta di credito, infatti, è falsa, e Dall’Isola non è un finanziere, ma un attore che si è prestato, per compenso al gioco di Alex e Jacques. Lo smacco subito è grave, ma Warren si consola ben presto con la compagnia di Gloria.
