Trama
Michele Pezza, mezzo soldato e mezzo brigante, detto “Fra Diavolo”, combatte con le sue masnade tra i monti della Campania per cacciare i francesi dal Regno di Napoli. Riuscito nell’intento, il nuovo governo lo ricolma di onori ed egli può sposare una nobile napoletana che amava da tempo. A lungo andare però in quella vita inoperosa tra gli agi e le ricchezze sente nostalgia dell’esistenza avventurosa che ha sempre condotto. Quando i francesi tornano nuovamente alla carica, egli è ben felice di ricostituire le sue bande irregolari e dare battaglia senza quartiere finché, sopraffatto dal numero, viene catturato e condannato a morte. Grazie all’intervento di un’influente dama innamorata di lui viene liberato a condizione di sottomettersi ai francesi. Durante il viaggio a Napoli, Fra Diavolo riesce a fuggire e si nasconde tra le sue montagne entrando nella leggenda.
