Trama
Il letterato Francesco Montort, scopre che sua moglie Irene, per la quale nutriva un affetto sincero e fiducioso, lo tradisce con un amico di famiglia. Nel frattempo l’ingenuo amore di un’allieva, Germaine, gli offre un conforto che non sa negare a se stesso: così Germaine diviene l’amante di Francesco che condurrà d’ora in poi una duplice esistenza. Dopo qualche tempo ciacuna delle due donne dà alla luce un figliolo; ma Francesco sa che solo il figlio di Germaine è suo mentre l’altro appartiene in realtà all’amante. Quando Germaine improvvisamente muore, Francesco con la complicità della nutrice, sostituisce in casa sua, al figlio della moglie e del seduttore, il figlio di Germaine. Il figlio di Irene è affidato ad una sorella di Germaine. Dopo alcuni anni, Irene, che da un pezzo ha lasciato l’amante, scopre che il marito conduce una duplice esistenza, continuando a frequentare il nido d’amore che Germaine ha lasciato vuoto. Tra i coniugi ha luogo una lunga spiegazione, Irene scopre che il ragazzo che ha allevato in casa sua non è suo figlio e…
