Trama
Nando, un ragazzo di tredici anni con il vizio del furto, viene messo in un riformatorio. Un giorno riesce a fuggire e si mette a vagabondare per la città, senza avere il coraggio di tornare da sua madre: teme infatti ch’ella lo riporti al riformatorio. Nando fa amicizia con alcuni coetanei e li aiuta nel lavoro che svolgono presso una modesta stazione di rifornimento, nel cortile di un gran casamento popolare. Qui può passare la notte; Marietta, una domestica ancora quasi bambina, gli procura un po’ di cibo. Intanto i carabinieri lo ricercano senza sosta e sua madre trascorre ore di angoscia. Nando ha conosciuto anche un altro inquilino del gran casamento: il sor Luigi, un suonatore ambulante, che lo prende con sé e lo manda con il piattino a raccogliere le offerte, dopo aver suonato. Il sor Luigi, dapprima diffidente, s’è poi convinto della fondamentale lealtà ed onestà di Nando, il quale infatti ha giurato a se stesso di non ricadere più nella sua viziosa abitudine. Il sor Luigi s’è affezionato al ragazzo e lo difende a spada tratta, quando la sua padrona di casa, la sora Gertrude, un’affittacamere, accusa il ragazzo di averle rubato due candelieri d’argento. Nando è innocente ed egli stesso, aiutato dai suoi giovani amici, scopre il vero ladro, che è Giulio, il nipote della padrona di casa. La scoperta è accompagnata da un tafferuglio che frutta a Nando una ferita: ricoverato all’ospedale, vi trova la sua mamma, disposta ormai a credere alla sua onestà.
