Trama
A Stoccolma, negli anni ’20, il dodicenne Roland Schutt, con padre socialista, madre ebrea russa, e con il fratello maggiore Bertil, aspirante pugile, affronta le difficoltà ambientali con coraggio. Il padre, Fritiof, si arrangia in ogni modo, ma soffre di sciatica, e deve ricorrere alla morfina. Si fa propaganda al profilattico presso le classi povere, e la polizia interviene ed arresta tutti, compreso Fritiof che si picchia con gli agenti. Roland prende a credito la bicicletta del compagno Stickan, ma non può pagarla perché deve riparare i guantoni strappati al manesco fratello, il quale tenta con poca gloria la via del ring, svenendo ancora prima di combattere, sfibrato com’è dalla prolungata sauna fatta per scendere di peso. Roland decide di vendere i profilattici sottratti alla genitrice, che li distribuisce clandestinamente a negozio, dapprima come palloncini, e dopo che la madre glieli buca, come elastici di fionde che vende per saldare il debito. Stickan ha venduto la sua bicicletta ma gliene procura altre da aggiustare e verniciare. A scuola il maestro Lundin non perde occasione per umiliarlo e punirlo, ed uniche consolazioni sono l’amicizia con un rospo, detto Heriksson, e con una prostituta bambina Margit, che finirà annegata. Gli affari di Roland in fionde e biciclette crollano, essendo queste ultime di provenienza furtiva: gli viene estorta una confessione che gli costerà il correzionale.
