Trama
Aleardo è un giovane architetto italiano ricco e sognatore. Per fuggire al quotidiano ama dirigersi con la sua barca a vela verso luoghi lontani. Un giorno, approda per caso nell’isola di Ocana, ancora incontaminata e selvaggia. Qui vivono, come rimasti nel passato, tre nobili portoghesi decaduti. Sono il malinconico e tormentato Ilario e i suoi biechi fratellastri Hipolito e Felipe. Nella loro casa vive anche la povera Iguana, una giovane domestica che i tre uomini trattano come una schiava e che deve subire di continuo ogni tipo di angheria e sopruso. Aleardo si trattiene nella loro casa per un giorno e una notte, restando subito colpito dalle stranezze dei tre fratelli e turbato dalle sofferenze inflitte alla povera ragazza. Ma bastano poche ore perché anche lui sia risucchiato nella loro realtà, in bilico tra la credenza popolare che vede in Iguana l’ultima e più terribile incarnazione del diavolo e la sua percezione che sia invece un essere indifeso, da trarre in salvo.
