Trama
Dirki, figlio del pianista Anton De Vries de Pretoria (Sud Africa), è un bimbo fragile, sensibilissimo, bisognoso di sole e aria pura Lo zio Peter carica lui e la cagnetta Lilly sul proprio minuscolo aereo, ma mentre sorvola il deserto alla volta del proprio ranch, è stroncato dall’infarto e l’aereo precipita. Dirki e Lilly, incolumi, sono destinati a perire in quel lungo senza risorse e pieno di insidie. Dopo un breve contatto radio col padre, il ragazzo accende un fuoco per tenere lontano le belve, ma involontariamente distrugge l’aereo e con esso la radio. Mentre le ricerche da parte dall’esercito e di volontari non approdano a nulla, il piccolo e la cagnetta sono insidiati da belve, serpenti, insetti velenosi, soprattutto dalla mancanza di acqua e dal sole implacabile. Dirki scopre, nella sua disparata volontà di sopravvivere, una insospettata forza e ricorre con successo a mille astuzie, coadiuvato decisamente dalla cagnetta. Due negri, padre e figlioletto, lo salvano in extremis, ma poi lo abbandonano perché egli nella sua allucinazione li ha offesi atrocemente. De Vries fa lanciare sul deserto milioni di volantini con istruzioni, Dirki ormai sfinito ne legge soltanto le prime parole: “Ti voglio tanto bene e ti ritroverò”. Questo basta a sorreggerlo fino al ritrovamento finale da parte del padre, coadiuvato dal negro, commosso dalla disperazione di lui.
