Trama
Rodolfo d’Asburgo, pur conducendo una vita libera ma noiosa, non disdegna avallare i moti degli studenti e le intenzioni di indipendenza dell’Ungheria, i cui emissari intendono offrirgli la corona di re. Dopo un casuale incontro in un parco, egli ritrova la giovane Maria Vetsera, di famiglia borghese, ad una serata di gala. Per mezzo di sua cugina, Rodolfo, che vive separato dalla moglie, fissa un appuntamento per Maria. I due, pur conoscendosi appena, si innamorano. Ma l’imperatore non vede di buon occhio questa relazione e, sollecitato anche dal Primo Ministro, per tenerlo lontano da Maria offre un incarico di responsabilità a Rodolfo, che lo espleta con diligenza. Capite le intenzioni del padre, Rodolfo dà le dimissioni ma, a sua insaputa, Maria viene fatta partire. Egli però la ritrova e la porta al castello di Mayerling. Intanto la rivoluzione d’Ungheria sta per scoppiare: egli promette la sua partecipazione e offre ai patrioti il suo anello. Ma i moti vengono sanguinosamente repressi e i suoi amici arrestati. Posto nella condizione di dover rispondere dei suoi atti e rinunciare a Maria, egli, d’accordo con lei, la uccide e quindi si suicida.
